Nocturnal woodpeckers?
I have a woodpecker either in or trying to get in to the eave of my home which is just above my bed. Periodically, it will commence making a racket pecking on either the wood or aluminum during the wee hours (2,3,4 AM) of the morning. It is quite annoying, and since the house is so high, I cannot observe what it is doing, can't get access to the attic or cavity it is in or trying to get into, but it is incessant. It is not a tree branch, absolutely a "pecking" animal, not a squirrel. What could this be?
To a woodpecker 2AM is morning enough. If it is a steady tapping, he is calling other woodpeckers to establish territory or find a mate. It is slower and deeper, he is looking for food.
Tapping on aluminum is classic woodpecker communication. Their sounds can be carried louder and they know it.
