Why are dogs obsessed with tennis balls, and balls in general?
My two dogs like nothing better than chasing tennis balls around the garden, which I hit with a golf club for them to fetch.
It may have something to do with the thrill of the chase.
Most domestic dogs cant fulfil the need to hunt or chase so a ball may be providing them with that sort of stimulation.
My dog is obsessed with the ball also. It is so funny because he will sit out on the front lawn and guard his ball. As soon as we go outside or someone comes over he races over with the ball. He will guard it for an hour sometimes and he gets so excited when you throw it to him.
I look after another dog also and it becomes a huge competition for them to get the ball first. My dog is a devil, he always has to be up to something, Ill often be in the kitchen doing something and he's put a ball or a tugofwar rope at my feet, he'll bark once to say "come on" then he'll step back and wait, totally fixated on the ball or rope.
Such characters! I love how our dogs enjoy the simplest things in life!
