String tension On My Tennis Racket?
I own I Wilson (K)Surge and I will be re-stringing it soon and I was wondering if I should go with a lower or higher string tension. I'll be playing on the highschool team this season and we are close to the best in the state
First off, I'll address the string itself. If you aren't sure what you are really looking for in a string, I usually suggest getting a standard synthetic gut string (I prefer Prince Syn. gut with duraflex). If you take it into a pro shop for stringing, just ask for their standard synthetic gut. It should be the cheapest option they have, too. And I would definitely recommend taking to a pro shop or club to get it strung. DO NOT trust the big-name sporting goods stores for stringing. I worked at one for a summer, and after being on the inside I would never trust them again for any racquet services.
The recommended tension range for your frame is 53-63 lbs. Again, since you aren't sure exactly what you're looking for yet, I would string right in the middle of that. So 58 lbs. A syn. gut at mid tension is about as 'default' or 'basic' as you can get for a frame. This will give you a good reference point for where to go from there the next time you want to string.
As you use it with this string/tension combo, 'listen' to the feedback you are getting from the frame. How's it feel? Are you having any particular problems with anything? Basically, if you don't feel like you have enough control, or you have a tendency to hit long, string a little tighter next time. On the other hand, if it feels like you're hitting the ball with a board, and you have difficulty hitting deep enough, string a little looser next time. I would stick with the cheap syn. gut option though, until string breakage becomes more of a problem for you.
