Is a 4 3/8 Tennis Racquet grip right for me?
I am 16 and a beginner. I ordered the Prince airO hybrid thunder racquet 4 3/8 Grip Size last night. I am 5' 10" 140 pounds...is this right for me?
If you used the old standard measuring algorithm of going from the center crease in the palm of the hand up to the end of the ring [4th] finger, this may be too large of a grip. OTOH, maybe you would prefer a larger grip, simply because you feel better about how it feels in YOUR hand.
If 4 3/8 is close to being correct, then go to your favorite tennis shop, sporting goods store and ask to use their loaner [demo] program and play with several rackets with different grip sizes, 4 1/4, 4 3/8, and 4 1/2. Measure the circumference of the grips of each racket, so you know for certain what you're actually playing with. To be really thorough, you might even add in 4 inch [even] grip and a 4 5/8 inch grip, to give you a larger spectrum too examine.
Next, play with all the grip sizes at least 3 or 4 times, until you develop a good image of how they actually work out for YOU. This is *your* decision, nobody else's. Take it seriously 
Too large of a grip can be a factor in injuring a player's wrist, elbow, etc. You also need a racket that is light enough for you to swing at a backhand with ONE hand [even if you use a two-handed backhand].
Over-grips have become very popular because they provide a "tacky" feel to the player, keeping the racket from slipping out of control during play. Today's rackets' grips can be built up, but many cannot be made smaller, like the old wooden grips could.
