Who choked the most: Gabriela Sabatini or Jana Novotna?
Jana Novotna and Sabatini are perhaps best known for the matches they didn't win. Everyone remembers Jana's choke against Steffi at Wimbledon, but Sabatini has some impressive chokes as well. Here's a look at their most famous chokes:
Jana:
1993 Wimbledon: Steffi Graf d. Jana 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. Jana was up 4-1, 40-15 in the 3rd, but Steffi won the next 5 games to take the match.
1995 French Open: Chanda Rubin d. Jana 7-6,4-6,8-6. Jana had 9 match points, but couldn't put Chanda away.
Sabatini:
1991 Wimbledon: Steffi Graf d. Sabatini 6-4,3-6,8-6. Sabatini served twice for the title, and was 2 points from victory. But Sabatini choked, as Steffi dispatched Sabatini.
1993 French Open: Mary Joe Fernandez d. Sabatini 1-6,7-6,10-8. Sabatini had 5 match points, but couldn't put Mary Joe away.
In my opinion, Sabatini choked more than Jana. At least Jana made up for her choking by winning Wimbledon. Compare them, and tell me who you think choked the most?. And why?.
I think the Sabatini matches were a a bit more of a see-saw affair from start to finish. The matches were close with her opponents eventually getting the final say.
The Novotna matches on the other hand, Novotna had huge leads that she let slip away. In that Rubin match she was up 5-0 in either the second or third set and I think she was also up 40-0 before she lost it. That Novtna-Rubin match has been called one of the biggest chokes in the history of the game.
I think Novotna was the biggest choker because losing a close match is not as bad as blowing a big lead.
